What does it take to become a male model
Working as a male model is a tough career choice, but it can also be an extremely rewarding
one. If you think you have the looks and physique to take on the world of modeling then here
are some hints and tips from Ryan M. Kolton in LA to help you understand what it takes to
become a male model.
Los Angeles up and coming model Ryan Kolton advises undertaking detailed research as your
first step.
“There are a lot of modelling agencies out there,” he explains, “So do your homework online
thoroughly before approaching them. Research each agency and then look through magazines
and other publications that include the names of agencies or of individual agents.”
Finding the right agent is a key determinant of the likely success of your modeling career, so an
early investment of your time in researching the best agent for you can reap big rewards.
Part of considering which modeling agency to use also relates to what’s available in your local
area. If you live in a big city then research the agencies available there. If you don’t, then be
wary of just jumping on a plane in pursuit of your dreams. “Think of it this way, everybody
knows all the talented models are in Sydney, Milan, Paris, New York, LA and Chicago, they have
agencies for this reason.”
Decent agencies will provide proper contracts, so make sure the paperwork is in order (read it
thoroughly and get a lawyer to review it) and that you are happy with the terms before you sign
anything or start incurring hefty travel expenses.
LA Model Ryan Kolton, also recommends speaking to other male models. He comments:
“Social media is your friend when it comes to connecting with other models and choosing your
agency. Put some feelers out, make connections and ask questions about the different agencies
available to you.”
The next step is to put together your ‘look book.’ Your look book should tell a story of what you
can do, the versatility of your looks and how you appear to the camera. Engaging a professional
photographer to help you create your look book is money well spent if you’re serious about
pursuing a career in modeling. Professionally lit, styled and posed images will show you off to
your best advantage, which is essential when you’re approaching agents.
“Once you’ve got an agent, be sure to take their advice on everything possible,” continues Ryan
Kolton. “When it comes to your hairstyle, speak to your agent before opting for a dramatic new
cut. The same is true of anything that may alter your appearance, so double check with your
agent before you get that spray tan you’ve been considering!”
It’s important to remember that modeling is not a 9 - 5 career. Like most freelance endeavors
there will be days – and even weeks – when you wonder when your next paying shoot will be.
Factor this into your plans and if you need income from elsewhere then make sure that job has
the flexibility you need to fit it in around your modelling.
Remember too that it’s essential not to let the click of the camera and the flash of the lights
take over your judgment. Know in advance what you are and are not prepared to do when it
comes to posing. If you don’t want to be photographed nude, or in your underwear, then fix
this firmly in your mind from the start. If you’re put on the spot with a sudden request, it will be
easier to politely decline if the conviction to keep your clothes on is already firm in your mind.
Sadly, not all agencies are as reputable as others and the modeling industry is home to some
individuals who seek to exploit those they photograph. Keep your wits about you and if you
don’t like the feel of a particular situation then walk away. Remember that a photograph can be
a permanent record in this day and age – once pictures are on the internet, you can’t untake
them!
“Keeping track of yourself online is another important part of being a male model,” adds LA
Model Ryan M. Kolton. “Google or Yahoo, your own name and images regularly to find out
which images are appearing and to understand your reach.
