"It must be Italy"
History, architecture and outstanding cuisine all in one place? It must be Italy
Many in the US have long been fascinated by the mysteries of Italy. A country steeped in history and boasting some incredible ancient architecture, not to mention a superb gastronomic scene, Italy is a hit with all those who visit.
Italy has certainly made its mark on the world over the centuries. The Roman empire once covered much of the globe and Rome is still an incredible city. Home to the Vatican, as well as to ancient ruins such as the Colosseum, it is an awe-inspiring city to visit
.
“I’ve been lucky enough to explore various countries as part of my profession, “but few have made such a deep impression on me as Italy. The people are so friendly and welcoming, the long, Mediterranean coastline is just stunning and the sense of history is simply staggering.”
Italy has impacted Western culture in many ways. Take its contribution to the art world, for example. Birthplace of the Renaissance, Italy is home to masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo, not to mention the wondrous Sistine Chapel.
Italy’s influence on Western cuisine is also inescapable, from pizza and pasta to the delights of gelato.
All of this combines to make Italy a fantastic travel destination, whether you’re planning a family vacation, a romantic honeymoon or a solo break. However, with so much to do in this fascinating country, it can be hard to know where to start. As a photographer I will share top tips for making the most of Italy.
Top tips for visiting Italy
“Rome, Florence, Venice and Milan are all well worth a visit during a tour of Italy,“Start with the capital, Rome, to get a true sense of Italian culture and life. Hop onto an express train from the airport in order to delve into the heart of the city and immerse yourself in its art, museums and café culture. I defy anyone not to fall in love with Rome!”
Rome is a city that rewards those who start their day early. It’s a wonderful city to explore on foot in the cool of the morning. Getting lost and discovering hidden streets away from the main thoroughfares is a must. Look for small, neighborhood cafés frequented by elderly locals rather than tourists and stop regularly for a coffee or an aperitif as you wind your way around the city.
Taking in Rome’s outstanding architecture and rich artistic scene is also essential. The Colosseum, Vatican City, St Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, the Spanish Steps and the Sistine Chapel are all essential viewing. While in Vatican City, be sure to tour the Vatican Museums as well, to enjoy some of the finest art in the world.
“Rome is a tourism hotspot, so bear that in mind during your visit. Touring this cosmopolitan city is a delight, but do purchase tickets to popular tourist attractions in advance and start your days early in order to beat the queues. That way, you can enjoy a morning of sightseeing before the crowds build too much, then retire to a café or restaurant for a lengthy, relaxing meal to recharge your batteries.”
Once you’ve had your fill of Rome, head out of the city and into the countryside. A journey of 1-2 hours will land you in the magical city of
Civita Di Bagnoregio
. A perfect honeymoon location or writer’s retreat, the city looks like it would be perfectly at home in Game of Thrones. It’s a wonderful place to reconnect with yourself or to enjoy spending time with those you’re closest to.
Another short car ride will take you into the wonders of Tuscany. The Tuscan landscape is known around the world for its stunning beauty. Be sure to take in the sunflower fields of Maremma and the plentiful vineyards near Siena to enjoy some of the region’s most iconic vistas.
For a complete contrast, head to Milan, Italy’s fashion capital. This thriving metropolis is perfect for exploring on foot, with plentiful stops at cafés and bars as you enjoy getting your bearings.
“Take it slow and relax as you explore Milan. No one is in a hurry in this glorious city, so enjoy slowly meandering through the streets, participating in the café culture and soaking up the sites.
Milan’s museums and theaters, as well as the must-see landmakers of the Cathedral, Sforza Castle and the collection of Leonardo da Vinci paintings that the city is home to.
Finally, head to Venice to witness the wonders of the ‘City of Water’ and its crisscross network of canals. Be sure to admire the views both from land and from the water – no trip to Venice would be complete without enjoying a gondola ride!
“Italy is a country that truly captures the heart and imagination.
This is the second time I’ve had the pleasure of visiting and it certainly won’t be the last. It’s a country with so much to offer that a single visit really doesn’t do it justice, no matter how long you stay for!”
